Selecting the ideal metal for your handmade piece will impact the overall look of your piece.
The Diamond Works is focused on working with the following precious metals and shares more information on each metal.
Platinum is a gray-white metal that is elegant, extremely durable and corrosion resistant.
Platinum is soft in its pure state, therefore platinum is typically alloyed with other metals such as iridium, ruthenium and cobalt. The Diamond Works makes use of the following high quality alloy compositions and will mark them accordingly; jewellery containing 950 platinum (95% platinum and 5% alloys) which is marked “Platinum”.
Jewellery settings with 90% or 85% platinum (”traditional platinum”) will be marked 850Plat or 850Pt.
The Diamond Works steers away from settings with lower alloy combinations but be aware that jewellery settings that contain 50% to 80% platinum must also include the percentage of each alloy (e.g., 800 Pt. 200 Ir., for platinum alloyed with iridium) to meet international standards.
Platinum is generally more expensive than gold, but it is also hypoallergenic and more durable.

Gold is the most popular precious metal for premium jewellery which has been used for thousands of years. Gold enchants with its color, rarity and luster (the appearance of a material’s surface in reflected light). Like platinum, pure gold is soft, so it is typically alloyed with other metals. Karat is the term used to state gold’s fineness, which is based on 24 parts.
Gold that is 75% pure—18K gold—is 18 parts gold and six parts an alloying metal.
The karatage 14K gold—is 14 parts gold and 10 parts another metal.

Rose gold is a new current high trend precious metal and this composition is made by alloying gold with copper and silver.

Yellow gold has the traditional golden colour and has a lower maintenance demand than white gold which appears to have a white or silver appearance. White gold requires rhodium plating regularly, atleast twice a year, to maintain the white appearance.
